Programme structure
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Upgrading) programme is offered over eight (8) trimesters, each lasting 15 weeks. The programme comprises 47 nursing and related course units and 5 clinical placement units.
The programme builds progressively from foundational biomedical and nursing sciences to advanced clinical nursing, community health, mental health, midwifery, leadership and management, nursing informatics, research, and clinical practice. Students also undertake a research project as part of the programme.
The programme is delivered through a blended learning model. The theoretical component is delivered primarily online through the Open University of Kenya Learning Management System, while clinical components are undertaken through scheduled face-to-face supervised clinical placements. Students complete clinical placements in approved healthcare facilities, progressively distributed across the programme. These placements help students integrate theory with practice and demonstrate the required nursing competencies under supervision.
Assessment methods
Assessment is conducted through a blend of continuous academic tasks and formal summative examinations.
